DDO Compendium:Image Policy

From DDO Compendium

This policy is intended to give guidelines for adding images to the DDO Compendium.

Image Types[edit]

In most cases, images should be uploaded in the .png format. The wiki does support other popular image formats but png's are the most widely used by all browsers. Please do not upload images in the new .webp format as some browsers do not handle them.

Image Compression[edit]

It is recommended to run every image that you upload to the Compendium through a compression tool. There are several available online for free. One that is recommended is TinyPNG. It preserves background transparency and does not damage images in such a way that other compression tools use.

Uploading compressed images accomplished a couple things. First, when a page is loaded, the images will load exponentially faster (ideal for mobile data connections). Second, it preserves server storage space.

Image Naming[edit]

When uploading images, name them accordingly. The name should be as descriptive as possible. For example, if you are uploading the Feat icon for Attack, a suitable name for the image would be Feat_Attack.png. At all times, you should maintain proper spelling and capitalization of the words in the image name.

Most of the times the images will be automatically named. Be aware that for all items, there are ways to not upload duplicates. Every item template contain an image field (for those that have actual images) and icon field (for the icons). In addition, there are not many icons in the game, and unless it is single, try to use one as defined DDO Compendium:Shared Icons.

For Wands, their images are limited, so use (if applicable) one of the already uploaded basic wand images, found here DDO Compendium: Wand Images

Image Sizing[edit]

  • Full sized images (screenshots/loading screens/etc): 1920px x 1080px
  • Examine windows (item description): 400px x variable (will depend on how long the window is)
  • Icons (enhancements/feats): 36px x 36px
  • Enhancement Trees: 300px x 500px

New Versions[edit]

Newer versions of images should be uploaded anytime a higher resolution screenshot is available. New versions should also be uploaded whenever an image changes in-game due to a game update.

Examine Windows & Custom Game Skins[edit]

Whenever possible, examine window screenshots should be tightly cropped and be taken using the default DDO UI skin. As custom skinning is not fully supported by DDO, this is recommended to maintain uniformity across the Compendium.

Cosmetics[edit]

All cosmetically viewable items (cosmetics proper, weapons, etc) should be taken against a neutral background whenever possible. Examples of neutral backgrounds include the skybox of the top deck of guild airships, or a dark entryway to a quest.
